Freedom Radio was started in 1988 by Craig Benson and broadcast from various locations in the heart of the West Midlands.
Freedom Radio was one of the first, largest and most popular pirate radio stations ever to hit the FM band.
Transmitting (for most of the time) on 102 fm, Freedom Radio soon became very popular, at it’s height it was transmitting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a complement of 35 DJ’s covering all genres of music.
With it’s sense of fun and unrivalled commitment to it’s listeners, you could always guarantee calling the station ‘live’ at any time of the day or night with your request or dedication, and receiving an instant response and record play.
Freedom is still fondly remembered today for its innovation and ‘fun’ way of bringing the music and listener together – a real ‘community station’
Many of the presenters who took their first step into radio with Freedom are now working as professional presenters or DJ’s.
If you worked for Freedom Radio either as a presenter or support staff or indeed if you were one of the tens of thousands of listeners who tuned in, please share you name and memories with us here.
